 The puranas, have listed 108 sites where Shakti (the goddess of power) is manifested. Amongst these, the Karveer area (the area where the present town of Kolhapur is located), is of special significance. This is one of the six abodes of Shakti, where one can achieve both fulfillment of desires as well as salvation from them. It is therefore considered to be of greater significance than Uttar Kashi. Shri Mahalakshmi is the consort of Shri Vishnu and it is said that they both reside in the Karveer area(Kolhapur).

Temple History

Mahalakshmi Temple(Ambabai) was first constructed in Chalukya period (550 A. D. to 660 A. D.) This is evident from the style of the ido's sculpture. Also, some historians state that Goddess Mahalakshmi in the form of an idol was consecrated in Kolhapur temple during the reign of King Manglesh from the Chlukya Dynasty.

Panchaganga Ghat is one of the oldest spots in Kolhapur. The civilization of Kolhapur began on the banks of River Panchganga. The bank on West end of City is known as Panchganga Ghat. Every year a Fair is organized here and attracts thousands of tourist from all over Maharashtra and India. Local Authorities have plans to develop this location further for immersion of Ganpati Idols during Ganesh Festival.

In ancient times, there was a thick forest here. Narasinha Saraswati Swami is one of the 16 descents of Lord Datta. Kurundwad was his spot of penance. Wadi has during 1034-1982 tradition of Ramchandra Yogi, Narayan Swami, Mouni Maharaj, Tembe Swami & Mhadaba Patil whose tombs are seen. The original Mandir on the confluence of the Krishna Panchganga has a tradition of 500-600 years. 
In the daily routine from the dawn. "Maha-pooja with eating leaves and golden crown is worth-seeing. Exept Chaturmas (4 Rainy months) every night the palanquin is taken out before which various hymns are sung. The auspicious, religious atmosphere created is impressing. 
The Mandir is managed by Devotees' Mandal under West Maharashtra Devasthan committee. There are shops with Datta Cult-things & sweet marts. Saint Eknath got the Ghat built as per Paithan's. On purnima & Kanyagat big fairs are held.

It is the glory of the city. Being the biggest & oldest building, it has historical importance. When Kolhapur became self-governed, this place was built. It has fine and sound construction with 14 squares. In about 1813, the Muslim knight Sadakhan invaded the palace and a part of it was burnt. After repair, 7 squares survived. At the center there is the temple of Kulswamini Tulja Bhavani. History tells that Shambhu alias Abasaheb Maharaj was killed in this very Mandap. Near by stands a body-built statue to commemorate Shahu Maharaj. As a memory of his hunting a stuffed tiger and buffalo are kept. Tomb to right with coloured fishes and a tiny temple of Lord Shiva, all appears to be history incarnate! Opposite to the temple is a grand hall-pendal which was erected in 1918 A.D when Shreemant Akkasaheb Maharaj, daughter of Shahu Maharaj was married. Further, during 1926-30 Chhatrapati Rajaram Maharaj gave a new form to it. Taking away original wooden arches, the hall was made tall and splendid. Within the compound walls of the Mandap, Motibag Gymnasium, Rajwada Police Station, Maharashtra Battalion are working on a splendid entrance gate.

About 60km northwest of Panhala and 18km south from Kolhapur-Ratnagiri road. Vishalgad is situated on a mountain. The road passes through thick wood. The fort is separated by a deep narrow riven from the road terminus. Its vastness is big as per its name Vishal. Steep cliffs separate it from adjoining land, making difficult to enter except existing entrance. One Bhosala warrior climbed this fort with the help of Ghorpad (an iguana) and captured it on behalf of Adilshaha of Bijapur. He was named Ghorpade onwards. 

The Bhunda Darwaja or a bare gate seen from the busstop shows wrong way of the entry. Actual entry is separate. Nothing is there except the ruins of old buildings. Now the fort is known to people as place of Malik Raihan Dargah. A Sati Mandir is there in memory of Ambadevi the queen of King Rajaram I , who burned as Sati after the death of her husband. The Samadhi or tomb of great warrior Baji Prabhu Deshpande who fought until death with Siddi Masood, commander of Adilshaha who was perusing Shivaji at the time when he escaped from siege of Siddi to fort Panhala and was rushing to Vishalgad. He was about to capture Shivaji in Ghod Khind, a narrow pass 15 km short of Vishalgad Baji Prabhu stood there as a wall. Siddi succeeded to pass the Khind only after his death, by the time Shivaji was reached Vishalgad. Baji Prabhu alongwith his brother Fulaji who also killed that time were cremated here afterwards. Regular bus service is there from many cities in nearby area.

 It is one of the spot aloof from publicity but working. It is only a mile from Kolhapur. It is said that in the 14th century Shiva-Pindi was, installed by a Lingayat Priest on a high hill surrounded by natural beauty. Original Mandir was Hemadpanti. The interior is 10'x10' with 2 small mandaps out side, with a big Naadi Built on engraved stone-pillars, it is peaceful and charming. 

About 500 years ago, a Lingayat Priest kadsiddheshwar developed it. A well 125' deep is seen. Shivaji & Sambhaji Maharaj visited & donated. A tomb of Muslim Priest Mirasaheb, who was a great devotee of Lord Shiva, was built on this hill, as in Miraj. It is equally worshipped.

Lakhs of devotees form Maharashtra & Kamatak gather on Shivaratri. Frorn their gifts Kadsiddheswar Institute works out many plans. It raised the idol of Shiva 42' tall, and holy water is given through an elephant's trunk. Bus-service is available from Kolhapur. The spot is really worth visiting!

A Charming Spot : Kolhapur has a peculiar cultural influence owing to various ancient temples. Formerly, other deities were established around central Mahalaxmi for her protection Siddha Batukeshwar in the east, Tryamboli in the west, Jyotirling in the north & Katyayani to the south. This Deity is mentioned in the 'Karveer-Mahatmya.' 
In ancient times the Demon Kolhasur had kept Demon Raktabeej for the protection of this area. In the mean time, Mahalaxmi declared war against Kolhasur and sent Bhairava to suppress Raktabeej. But as soon as he was struck, many demons began to be created out of his blood. So Bhairav was powerless. Then Mahalaxrni at once sent Katyayani who made 'Amrut Kund' (Nectar tank) and kept in it illusionary demons born of blood. Again rejuvenating Bhairav's army, Katyayani destroyed Raktabeej. So goes the mythological story. 
It is found from historical records that Chhatrapati Shahu, Rajaram and Akkasaheb Maharaj used to visit the temple, on hunting campaign. This temple proves a pleasant relief for Kolhapur citizens tired with the dull, daily drudgery of life.

 It stands previous to the compilation of 'Karveer-Mahatmya'. It is in the premises of 'Ghati-Darvaja' to the north of Mahalaxrni Mandir. The 'Pinda' (round-oblong stone) is called Kashi Vishweshwar. The 'Karveer-Mahatmya' says that it was visited by sage Agasti, Lopamudra, King Pralhada & King Indrasen Formerly, before the Mandir there were two holy tanks-Kashi and Mani Kamika, of which Manikamika is completely drained, and upon it the corporation has started a garden (Mahalaxmi Udyana) since 1962, While the present condition of Kashi Kund is very pitiable. The interior of the Mandir is 10' x 10'. It is said that in the outer small Mandap there is an ancient cave meant for meditation. In the entrance part there are idols of Ganapati, Tulsi etc. Adjacent is a small temple of Jotiba. This Mandir might have been built during 6-7 A. D., King Gandvadix extended it. Ghati Darwaja, Kartik Swami, Shesha Varma, Navagraha Mandir belong to the same period.

Panhala is a fascinating hill station and Fort in Kolhapur District in Maharashtra. Its height from see level is at an altitude of 3177 ft. Panhala is famed for its rich historic heritage, ancient monuments and gallant forts. The history of Panhala is closely linked with the history of the Maratha empire, and with its founder, Shivaji. This imposing fort, 20 km northwest of Kolhapur, is built on an outlying spur of the Sahyadris, and is the largest of all the Deccan forts. The strategic importance of Panhala, guarding one of the principal routes through the Western Ghat, can be judged from its long and varied history. Built between 1178 and 1209, it first served as the headquarters of the Shilahara ruler Bhoja II, and subsequently passed into hands of the Yadavas. It was a favorite outpost of the Bahamanis of Bidar; Mahmud Gawan, the powerful prime minister, encamped here during the rainy season of 1469. By the beginning of the 16th century Panhala was absorbed into the kingdom of Bijapur. The Adil Shahis were responsible for strengthening and rebuilding the ramparts and gateways. The fort was raided by Shivaji in 1659, but it was not until 1673 that he was able to occupy it permanently. Many parts of fort are still in good condition. Fort is covered with defence wall(fortifications), which is more than 7km.

Ancient king Bhanudas is mentioned to have bathed and washed away his sins in this tank. 33 crores of Gods 5 demons had a terrible fight in this city. The Gods were defeated and only a crore survived. As per their appeal, Laxmi, with 9 crores female friends, defeated the demons. The Gods bathed in the tank which was named 'Koti-teerth' as per demons demand. This is 3 miles far from the Mahalaxmi Mandir, to the east. Original Mandir is very small with natural scenery around. It is customary that a pilgrim should first bathe in the tank and then have Darshan of the 'Pindi' which is black & fine. The interior is 6'x 6'. Usually, worship, Aarati, prayer are done. In these premises attendance of many devotees for diverse reasons is seen.

This is an ancient building on the Bhavani Mandap-Kasaba Bavda Road. It was constructed during 1877-1884. Being an excellent specimen of architecture build in black, polished stone, it has been an attraction for the tourists. It has extensive premises with a beautiful garden, fountain and wresting ground. The whole building is eight-angled and has a tower in the middle. The clock on it fixed in 1877. At separate distance there are small towers. On every glass are painted the events in Shivaji's life. There is zoo and a ground lake. Even today, it is the residence of Shreemant Shahu Maharaj. 

The New Palace is 1.5 kms further north on Bhausingji Road. Completed in the same year as the Hospital, this complex presents a novel blend of disparate features in contrasting basalt and sandstone. The principal south facade presents a double-storeyed range, with Neo-Mughal lobed arches beneath and temple-like columns and brackets above.This scheme is interrupted by trefoil arches capped with curving cornices and small domes. The same elements cap the octagonal corner towers. The central porch is marked by a pronounced curved cornice. To one side rises a 45m high clock tower capped with an octagonal domed pavilion. The interior of New Palace accommodates the Shahaji Chhatrapati Museum, given over to memorabilia of the Kolhapur rulers.

This clarifies that Panchaganga Bank & the Maha Laxmi temple were the attractions for the Shankaracharya. It also accounts for Selection of site for the 'Math' on the Panchaganga Bank.

The Kopeshwar, Ancient & artistic temple situated on the bank of Krishna river, is a fine example of ancient sculpture. It was built in 11-12 century by Shilahar. In the interior you see first Vishnu(Dhopeshwar) and Shivling facing north. But there is no nandi who has separate Mandir. Separate Actor-Pendal, hall, old pillars,carvings of gods & male-female artists in various poses are attractive. The ceiling is semicircular with matchless engravings. On the outside complete 'Shivaleetamrit' is carved When sati Parvati jumped into Daxa's sacrifice, Lord Shiva was angry. He got peace of mind in this temple. From entrance to Shivaling, we feel peace, coldness and dark. In Shravan, on Monday & Shivratri the mandir is crowded. The palanquin celebration is simply spectacular!

In 1935 Celibacy Resort was established and named after the sage Bahubali who mediated here about 300 years before. His tomb is here, with 4 towers. Further under the guidance of Gurudeo 108 Samant Bhadra Maharaj many resorts & schools were built 75 years before. 

Mulnayak : Nearly 850 cms high, white-colored idol of Bhagawan Bahubali in the Khadgasana posture. 

Historicity : The tirth is the land of penance of many ascetics. According to Digambars, this kshetra is regarded as an Atishay Kshetra. Nearly three hundred and fifty years ago, great and learned Digambar Acharya Samantabhadraji Maharaj Saheb practiced here severe penance. On this hill, there are ancient temples but the new idol was recently installed here under the auspices of His Holiness. 

Other temples : In the compound of this temple, there are beautifully and artistically made splendid and fascinating replicas of the Siddhakshetras and samovasaran. A shvetambar temple and a Digambar temple are there on this hill.

Temblai is a small hill having temple of Goddess "Renukadevi" and other small temples. Renukadevi has graced the temple on a lofty hill to the east of Karveer. There was a tank named 'Tarka Teertha' near, which is available to some extent even now and is called 'Takala'. The original Mandir is small and the idol is self-created. The idol has four hands and is of black stone. The idol poses with back turned to Mahalaxmi Mandir. She is also called 'Trayamali'. She is the spot of devotion of many Karveerians. In every Ashadha the religious ceremony of pouring water on the steps of the Mandir is celebrated on a grand scale. There is Yamai Mandir also. A statue of Shivaji Maharaj is raised by the Devasthan Committee. A huge Idol of "Ganpati" is situated at the center of the hill-top. A small garden is developed for visitors. Every year during the month of "Shravan" a one day celebration known as "Tramboli Yatra" takes place. People from Kolhapur and all other regions come to visit this place during this time. During Navratra Utsav procession of "Mahalaxmi" is carried from Ambabai Temple to Temblabai Temple. It is said that Goddess "Renukadevi" & "Mahalaxmi" are sisters. During the war against devils "Renukadevi" help "Mahalaxmi" but after the victory "Mahalaxmi" didn't gave the due respect which made "Renukadevi" angry and thus She came and settled at Temblai Hill. An interesting fact related to this story is that the Idol of "Mahalaxmi" faces West where as that of "Renukadevi" faces east. This hill gives a beautiful pictorial look of Kolhapur city. Many activities such as Laughing Club etc. also function from this place.

The Radhanagari Dam, located in the Kolhapur District of Maharashtra Radhanagari dam is constructed across Bhogawati River. Radhanagari Dam is a century old dam built by Chh. Shahu Maharaj ruler of Princely state of Kolhapur.
This dam is used primarily for hydro-electricity power generation and also for irrigation purposes. The dam is 1037 m long, covering about 11,000 hectares of wooded hills that surround the Radhanagiri Dam. There is also a hydroelectric project with an installed capacity of 10 MW. This dam mainly supplies water to the kolhapur Distict.
Dam is surrounded by Dajjipur Sanctuary. It makes it a scenic spot with a stunningly spectacular backdrop of thick forest covers. The dam site is a habitat for many birds and varied flora. Visitors flock here in large numbers each year to the see the spectacular bird species that grace the area around the Radhanagiri Dam. As a part of the promotion of Maharashtra tourism, the Radhanagiri Damn climbed the popularity chart and emerged as quite a favourite with locals, as well as tourists. Rankala Lake is an important place in Kolhapur with historical and cultural significance. It is a constant inspiration to cinema shooting, writers and artists. The lake is large and spacious.

The main reason Rankala builded was to storage of water and then supply it to farms and city. Water supply lines are still exists, though they are no more in use. There is temple of Rank Bhairav at the center of the lake. The name Rankala to the lake is also derived from this god. There are two ghats for the lake, one Rajghat and other Marathghat. There is a Rankala tower on the Rajghat called SandhyaMath. In front of it is Shalini palace. Rankala choupati is very famous and attractive to citizens and tourists. In the pleasent evening atmosphere, this choupaty gets crouded with tourists and citizens. Tourists enjoy boating, children park, horse riding and stalls of eatables. 
This lake was constructed by Chhatrapatis of Kolhapur. It is surrounded by chowpati, other gardens and pathway.Prior to the 8th century this historical place was just a stone quarry. In the earthquake which took place sometime in 9th century some natural structural change took place in the quarry. Water started accumulating in this quarry due to opening of an underground source. This accumulated water is today’s famous Rankala Lake.

Kolhapur is situated in the southwest part of the state of Maharashtra. It was a 19 gun zalute princely state ruled by the Bhosale Chhatrapatis of the Maratha Empire. During 940–1212 CE, it was the capital of the Shilahara dynasty of Kolhapur.
Kolhapur is known for the land of magnificent temples, is the religious pride of Maharashtra. Nested in the tranquil laps of the Sahyadri mountain ranges, it is situated on the banks of the river Panchganga.
